KATHLEEN

Fuelled by a passion for the beauty industry at a very young age, Kathleen began her career as a hairdresser when she was only 17. After completing her apprenticeship, she decided to move to France in order to work in one of the most renowned salons and to learn from the leaders of the industry. With the determination to become one of the best in her field, she continued her studies with an Advanced Diploma in Hairdressing and a Bachelor with the specialisation of a “stylist/visagist”. After successfully completing her degree, she carried on her journey living in various cities across the globe, learning something new from every salon she worked in.

When she arrived in Hong Kong she decided it was time to pick up another skill and trained to become a makeup artist. This lead the way to her working as a hair and makeup artist in the film and advertising industry, as well as being a private stylist throughout her stay in the country. After the birth of her first daughter, the young family moved to Sydney, where she has been living and working ever since.

A few years ago , she was first introduced to the Curly Girl Method by a good friend and fellow hairdresser who was trained directly by the founder and creator of the Curly Girl Method, Lorraine Massey. Fascinated by this completely new approach of curl by curl dry cutting, they began working together and Kathleen acquired every bit of knowledge about the art of dry cutting, colouring and styling natural curls. In order to deepen her skills, she decided to move on and started working at Yeah The Curls where she was trained by the owner of Sydney’s first dedicated Curly Girl Method hair salon. Transforming so many curly hair clients, she realised the enormous demand in this area and decided to open her own salon in order to give more curly hair clients the opportunity to find a stylist that actually knows how to approach, cut and style curly hair.

This is when Shades of Curls came to life, and she has been able to live out her dream and touch the lives (and hair) of so many curly clients ever since.

VALENTINA

Valentina’s journey in curly hair care began with her own experience. After years of straightening her hair and feeling uncomfortable, she embraced her natural texture, learning to love and care for her curls, waves, and afro-textured hair.

This passion led her to work in a salon in Colombia specialising in curly, wavy, and afro hair, where she spent 10 months as a junior hairdresser mastering curl care and styling techniques for different patterns.

In 2023, Valentina moved to Australia and continued her growth at Shades of Curls, expanding her skills to include colour techniques. Recently certified through TAFE, she now performs basic haircuts while continuing to refine her expertise in curly, wavy hair.

Valentina is renowned for her exceptional highlighting skills and expert styling techniques.

JASMINE

Jasmine began her career as a makeup artist in the film industry, where she worked for eight years. During that time she discovered a strong passion for hairdressing and gradually shifted her focus to the craft. In 2019, she completed her hairdressing training at Toni & Guy in Sydney, before travelling to New York to further her education in curly hairdressing at DevaChan in SoHo, one of DevaCurl’s most renowned salons. She’s been working with curls ever since.

At Shades of Curls, Jasmine focuses on celebrating natural texture and helping clients embrace and enhance their curls through tailored cuts, colour, and curl care.
